Third Grade

March 31, 2010

Today in third grade the children were beginning to learn division.  Everyone received a bag of 12 chocolate chip cookies (that looked great for construction paper and crayons).  The Doorbell Rang was read by their teacher-Mrs. Pendergast.  As the story was ready children acted out the story which involved "sharing" or "dividing" cookies equally with other story characters.  One child was heard saying, "this is fun and I get it."
The children continued practicing with the cookies and sharing among a designated number of people and learned how to form a division sentence.   JM, a student, noted that division was the opposite of multiplication.  Visually seeing and moving objects helped chiildren to develop an understanding of division.  The groundwork is being laid!  Good luck, Grade 3, Room 13.
